Who is Anaximander in philosophy

Anaximander was the first to introduce the Gnomon to the Greeks. Babylonian people used this, and Egyptian and Chinese Astronomy and Mathematics schools of that time used this to calculate time.

Thales started something for the Ionians, and the subsequent critical thinker took charge and came up with something different. Unlike the other successors of Thales, Anaximander refused to agree with their viewpoints of Thales. He felt that whatever Thales said was not the proper explanation for how the world works.

Anaximander of Miletus

Thales started a revolution for the Greek thinkers, and now this debacle and critical thinking cycle started with Greeks had no stopping point. Babylonians and Egyptians used their knowledge of Astronomy and Mathematics to make significant structures. Still, when the Greek People began asking more questions out of curiosity at that time, Egyptians and Babylonians became more ignorant of their scientific stuff.

What did Anaximander invent?

There was an old doctrine associated with the Greeks,  a subsequent physical theory among them, and it stated that every Physical aspect of the world shows a series of opposites. Just like Day and Night, Water and Fire, wet and Dry, cool and hot.

Anaximander and Thales have argued that the arguments were necessary for the history of Scientific Evolution.

Anaximander was the Pupil of Thales, but his views related to the Earth were different.

Anaximander’s viewpoints were so different that they would make a scratchy itch in your brain.

He thought that we humans took birth from different species because other animals take a short time to feed themselves, but humans spend more time suckling milk. Therefore, we would never be survived unless the first human is not born from another species. This was the era before the legendary Darwin came up with his revolutionary idea of the Theory of Evolution. Many people still think that theory of Evolution is a hoax.

According to Anaximander, thunder and lightning are caused because of Wind. Rain happens on the surface of Earth because of the moisture drawn upward from the Earth by the sun. So basically, according to him, the sun is hot, and thus it attracts the water on Earth, or the moist on Earth… to make it rain on the surface.

Anaximander map of the world

According to Anaximander, the world is divided into three continents, Europe, Asia, and Libya (Africa beyond the Nile river).

Anaximander theory

According to Anaximander, the Earth is not a disc; As Thales mentioned, The Earth is cylindrically shaped, the height of which is one-third of the width.
I know you are raising your eyebrows and thinking, what did this guy say, but yes, Science is slow… For example, It took thousands of years from Aristotle to Newton and From Newton to Einstein to understand gravitation.

What matters here is that these guys were thinking thoroughly, and each one coming next to them had some new ideas that could debate with the previous one, and after a few years, these debates increased to such an extent of scientific arguments that we know what we know as of today. We are so much more advanced today.

Greece, during the times of the Socrates era, considers critical thinkers like Socrates who question everything as a threat to their democracy. That is a later topic to discuss…

Anaximander said that Earth floats in the middle of the Universe and remains where it is because the Earth is central to everything. The shape of Earth is like a stone pillar which is convex and round. Or you can say he thought that the shape of Earth is like a cylindrical column. This cylindrical column is surrounded by Air and floats upright in the center of the Universe without support or anything to stand on.

He imagined that on Earth, we live on either one of the end surfaces.

Anaximander evolution

Anaximander was one of the greatest Critical thinkers of Ionian history. He was the first who stated that life on planet Earth started from water or what he called water as the Moist. He noted that something resembling Fish started life in aquatic waters and then they started to live on the planet’s surface.

The colonization concept was known to the Greek populous; thus, Anaximander used the word colonization while saying that the living thing resembling Fish started colonizing the land.

Such primitive thinking, but he also talked about man’s Evolution from animals. Thus he was not only the wisest astronomer in the beginning when the planets were mysteries, but also he was the one who at least started the thought process cycles by gathering such topics and giving his thoughts on them.
