In this blog, we will discuss what did Galileo invent? as per popular Christianity belief, Earth is center of universe. We will discuss Creationism, Catholic Inquisition, Copernican Heliocentrism, Roman Inquisition, Galileo Vs. Church.
“In questions of science, the authority of a thousand is not worth the humble reasoning of a single individual.”
Galileo Galilei
Introduction of Galileo
Galileo was one of the most phenomenal figures in the history of world science. Galileo was the founding father of Modern Astronomy.
He was the discoverer of the four moons of Jupiter. Later, they were known as the Galilean Moons. For his astronomical discoveries, he used a homemade Telescope. Galileo improved the Dutch design of the Telescope.
What Did Galileo Invent?
Thermometer, Better Calibration of Telescope.
The sector — A Military-grade Geometric compass.
Pendulum clock, and in 1592 when Galileo was appointed as the professor of Mathematics at the University of Pandua, He invented a Pump that was a better version of the Archimedean Screw, Later Known as the Galileo Pump,
Earth is the Center of the Universe
In the 2nd Century CE, Ptolemy invented or theorized the theory that the Earth is the center of this Universe. Not just for the Universe, but the Popular Creationism belief system also understood that the Earth is the center of almost everything and the Sun and Other Planets revolve around it.
During Galileo’s time, There were many misconceptions about the Planet Earth. Even though many Greek Philosophers already suggested that the Earth is Spherical, and In 200BCE, Eratosthenes had already calculated the Circumference of the earth, Popular belief followed the Biblical Reasonings for Planet earth that suggested.
- He stretches out the north over the void and hangs the earth on nothing. JOB 26:7
- He set the earth on its foundations so that it should never be moved. Psalm 104:5
- Tremble before him, all the earth; yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved. 1 Chronicles 16:30
Creationism
Creationism is a belief system that suggests the existence of a creator for every creation. Almost every major religion in the world tells creationism. There are many debates because no one precisely indicates the valid format of that creator. The definition of Creator is different for every religion. This isn’t very clear. If creation is the same, how come many theories suggest the various forms of the creator.
Galileo’s history was deeply related to the Catholics, and the Church influenced his life to a greater extinct.
Catholic Inquisition
During the 15th century, this Catholic Inquisition picked up the speed. This was a powerful office setup by some Christian authorities to lash out at those who were against the popular beliefs of the Catholic church and Bible. So basically, this wasn’t an authority set up against the Blasphemy, but going against the Christian belief or criticizing the religion with scientific facts was not celebrated. Galileo became a victim of the Catholic Inquisition after he openly supported Copernicus’s model of Heliocentrism.
Copernican Heliocentrism
In 1543, Copernicus published a Paper in which he mentioned the astronomical model, which considers the Sun as the center of the Universe and Planets like Earth orbit around it. Later on, it is proved that Sun is the Center of the Solar System, and Planets like Earth, Jupiter, and Mars orbit around it circularly. Later on, Kepler said those Orbits were Elliptical, but this Astronomical model by Copernicus attacked the attention of masses.
People who were opposed to the church supported the idea of Copernicus, and they celebrated him as the next man who could bring reforms in the understanding of the world. After Galileo’s support, The position of Copernicus was so strong in the eyes of people.
Anger of Church
Church Banned the book authored by Copernicus and published in 1543, “On the Revolutions of Heavenly Spheres.” It was the result of the Roman Inquisition.
Inquisición romana or Roman Inquisition
Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Roman and Universal Inquisition was later named as the Roman Inquisition. After the 16th century reformation, a new form of Christianity originated, Later Known as Protestantism.
Roman Inquisition was primarily settled for providing resistance to Protestantism.
The Inquisition’s ill effects; up to 5 million executions happened. Female scholars were killed because the authority of this inquisition thought they were witches performing witchcraft.
Galileo Vs. Church
The Outcome
As we all know, Galileo, Copernicus, and Kepler were right, and the church was wrong.
But it is good to accept the mistake; Church Accepted theirs,
